Green Chile House - North Salt Lake, Utah

Stopped in for lunch on Saturday afternoon. When we arrived, we were the only ones in the restaurant. There was a friendly lady cooking in the kitchen, but nobody else to greet us in the dining area.

We were a little skeptical because they had Guy Fieri's face plastered all over the restaurant. Apparently he had visited at some point.

Once a guy in a cowboy hat finally came out to the register he wasn't very helpful. Put one menu on our table and told us to come up to the register when we were ready. We shared the menu and then went up and placed our orders.

But, the food arrived fast and was amazing! They do use a bunch of canned stuff for sides and sauces, but the main dishes were done well. Best quesadilla I've had at a restaurant in a while, and the burrito was awesome. Also, they give you free chips and refills.

Worth stopping in for a meal!

I've heard from a couple of Friends about this place and finally decided to give it a try. It sits in a industrial area in a strip mall, So finding it could prove difficult. Immediately upon entering the restaurant a yellow New Mexico flag hung from the ceiling, I knew then this was going to be good. I ordered the dish that took 1st place in the Utah's Taco Fest 2023, Birria Tacos, which comes with three tacos (crisp flower tortillas filled w/shredded chuck roast with mozzarella cheese, onion, cilantro, and green chili sauce) rice and beans. ($16.00) Boy let me tell you this is a plate! I could only eat two tacos, You can easily split this with a friend. Great flavor, and they use Hatch green chilies from NM. The owner "Poncho" and his wife are so friendly, He brought over a sampling of his chili Verde with green sauce, which came with a generous portion of extremely tender pork and loaded with green chili, it was absolutely out of this world, and a red sauce all of which they make in house. You also receive complimentary chips and salsa and a hot sopapilla after your meal with a nice bottle of honey. Poncho is very welcoming and friendly. The establishment all though small is well decorated with New Mexico themes. It felt like I was back in that beautiful state. There is nothing Like the wonderful taste of Hatch green chili from New Mexico. Their flavor is different than what you will find at other Mexican establishments, My opinion, it is more flavorful. Give them a shot You will not be disappointed!

UPDATE: 1/26/25 Try the FISH tacos! I had my friend from Texas try one with me and the video I posted of her reaction says it all!… I could seriously eat here EVERY meal!

We are so blessed to have this lil piece of New Mexico on our own backyard in North Salt Lake! The food is amazing, staff is so inviting, friendly, and even remembers our orders! Even our kids love GCH!
The owner and his wife are so personable and on several occasions, he himself has brought us complimentary sopaipillas after our meal!
Great place to bring the whole family, even the picky eaters!
Don’t miss out on the green chili sauce, you’ll want to smother it on EVERYTHING!

Amazing tacos and fries!!! Savory and crispy with a slight kick. Super friendly staff and fun to chat with. Also had great sopapillas and burgers.

This is not only the best New Mexican food but it’s also the best Mexican food here in Utah! Everything we have tried was amazing, from the fried green chilies to the green chili lemonade!!! Thank you for opening such an experience!!!

We just had the best meal we've had since moving to Utah a few years ago! Literally everything about this restaurant is absolutely fantastic! We were immediately greeted like old friends once we walked in and given recommendations about what to try. We were served with enthusiasm and pride in what they do... and they should be proud because they are offering something that literally made me happy dance the whole meal.
The decor is classic New Mexico, and having moved from the southwest, we felt at home! The food pictured is the fried Hatch green chile strips with green chile ranch, the green chile cheeseburger, and the special of the day, green chile chicken alfredo. Every bite was delicious!!! The staff regularly checked in with us to make sure we were happy. The owner even brought us a side of freshly made green chile salsa for us to try alongside the other amazing salsa they serve with chips. They wrap up the meal with sopapillas and honey. You won't leave hungry.
I can't recommend this restaurant enough. It's the first place in a long time that has made us feel so warmly welcome, and the food...its just another level with flavor! We don't live anywhere near this place, but we will gladly make the drive to come back! 🙂

This is a family owned restaurant. New Mexico, green chili in almost all the dishes. I got the green chili hamburger with fries. Amazing! My buddy got the Birria tacos. He absolutely loved it.

Salsa was amazing! Sopapillas were good and free after the meal. 100% recommend.

This is now on my regular go-to list. After hearing about it for months, we stopped in for dinner. As everyone else has said, the food is amazing.

Obviously green chiles are the focus of everything. And thank goodness! I expected a more traditional Mexican menu, but I’m so glad it wasn’t. As the owner, who stopped by our table as we ate, said- it’s NEW Mexican, which I admit I didn’t know was “a thing”.

We started with Mexican street corn as an appetizer. I was a bit shocked to see it was around $8 or so, but when it arrived it was clearly meant for a table of 4+. It was huge. I didn’t see any of the mayo/chile powder that usually comes with elote. Instead it had it own flavor with green chile powder. We ate it until it was gone- very good.

Wife and I both ordered the birria tacos. The consommé that is usually served with birria was missing. Instead it had its own green chile dipping sauce. Wow! Again, a hit. The sides of beans and rice were equally good. Don’t be fooled by the small street taco sizes- neither one of us could finish our plates.

My daughter ordered dessert- the ice cream churro. It, too, was huge. It’s a churro fried in the shape of a cup with ice cream in the center. Delectable. Too big to finish, but she got close.

The waiter also gave us a complementary serving of sopapillas which were simple and hot and every bit as good as the rest of our order.

Upon seeing the menu, we were probably like anyone else— how expensive is New Mexico food going to be? And it’s a bit expensive. But, the servings are big. Keep that in mind. The food I mentioned above, plus soft drinks for us 3, came to $75. After eating, though, I believe it is worth it. Side note- the soft drinks are $4+ each, which is pricier than most places. We never had an empty glass, but this, to us, was our only complaint.

Service was great. Atmosphere is small and unique. Location is ok… it’s hard to find a good location in North Salt Lake. But it didn’t seem to matter. There was a steady stream of customers while we were there- to eat and to get take-out.

I watched three huge guys come in while we were eating. I could tell they could pack down a meal. And I could see it was their first time, too. Their food was gone in minutes, and each one gave at least one small eye roll and head shake as their way of saying “wow this is good!”
